Giant Sea Bass

Giant Sea Bass

Weighing in at about 300 pounds, our Giant Sea Bass has been an aquarium resident since 1998. With its black, gray and speckled coloring, this ocean giant expertly camouflages among kelp forests and rocky reefs. While its impressive size is hard to miss, the Giant Sea Bass also has a remarkably long lifespan and can live for decades.

The Colorful Life of a Giant Sea Bass

Did you know baby Giant Sea Bass start out bright orange with bold black spots? This eye-catching phase lasts for just about six months, when they’re only 2 to 6 inches long! As they grow, their look transforms into a mottled brown and white pattern—an in-between stage that can last from 1 to 14 years—before they finally adopt their iconic black-and-gray adult coloration.

A Giant Gulp!

Giant Sea Bass feed by creating powerful vacuum-like suction with their massive mouths, slurping up lobsters, crabs, smaller fish, shrimp, octopuses, and more. By preying on a wide range of marine animals, they help keep kelp forests in balance, preventing any one species from taking over.
