Experience Scripps Pier like never before on this exclusive walking tour led by Birch Aquarium! As the sun sets over the Pacific, explore fascinating marine life — like plankton, squid and sharks — and discover groundbreaking research from  Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This fall, tours will feature special highlights from the Scripps CO₂ Program, showcasing the latest in ocean monitoring and climate science.

Advanced reservations are required. Participants must be ages 9 and up. All minors (ages 9 – 17) must have their own ticket and be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Children under the age of 9 (including infants and toddlers) are not permitted on the Scripps Pier under any circumstances.

What experiences await on a Sunset Scripps Pier Walk?

During this 90-minute experience, Birch Aquarium educators will guide you along the iconic Scripps Pier, where you’ll explore the legacy of Scripps research, engage in hands-on science activities, spot local wildlife and take in the sunset. Along the way, we’ll explore local ecosystems from the tiniest plankton to top predators through a plankton tow, squid dissection, and shark jaw examination. This fall, our Scripps Pier Walks will also feature the Scripps CO₂ Program!

What wildlife might we see?

While wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed, guests often encounter a variety of marine life – including Round Rays, Shovelnose Guitarfish and Sardines – as well as birds like Ospreys, California and Western Gulls and even Peregrine Falcons! With a bit of luck, you might also glimpse dolphins, sea lions or even a Leopard Shark!

  • You will meet our educators at the entrance gate to the Scripps Pier on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The official address of the pier is 8650 Kennel Way, La Jolla, CA 92037.

Parking

  • Street parking is available between 8591–8611 La Jolla Shores Drive, but be sure to check for time restrictions to avoid a ticket.
  • On weekends and holidays, paid public parking is also available on the Scripps Campus in Lots P002 and P003 (8600 Kennel Way). Parking permits can be purchased in Lot P003.
Cancellation and Rescheduling Policies

Per our policy, cancellations or rescheduling must be made at least one week in advance. No refunds are provided for changes or no-shows within one week. To cancel/reschedule your program place, contact birchaquariumprogram@ucsd.edu or (858) 534-7336.

What should I wear?

We recommend dressing in layers and bringing a jacket, as temperatures may drop throughout the program. Please note that Scripps Pier is entirely outdoors and exposed to the elements. Comfortable shoes with good tread are also advised.

What do I need to bring?

Birch Aquarium educators will check in participant groups using the ticket emailed at booking, which includes the order number, program details, ticket holder, purchaser and group size. Please submit the digital waiver at least 24 hours in advance and be prepared to show your confirmation email at check-in.

Weather Cancellation Policy
