Scripps at Junior Acheivement’s BizTown

Imagine writing a business plan, ironing out a budget, and managing employees. Now imagine doing it all at only 11 years old.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps & Scripps Institution of Oceanography continue to be a proud participant in Junior Achievement’s BizTown, a unique learning experience for 5th graders in San Diego.

JA BizTown teaches students about the free enterprise system by having them actively participate in a simulated town of 21 life-sized shops, including non-profits like ours. We’ve hosted a Scripps “storefront” since 2008 in which students can take on the role of CEO, Visitor Services Representative, or Scientist.

Check out recent images of our young participants and a video that showcases the JA BizTown experience.

Students receive “paychecks” and can spend their money on items for sale in the storefronts. Scripps sells postcards and shark teeth.
