Leafy seadragon!

More than 1,500 superheroes, princesses, ghouls and goblins celebrated Halloween this past weekend at Birch Aquarium’s annual Haunted Aquarium. This year’s theme was Shipwrecked! and guests discovered many sunken treasures amongst our tanks and exhibits.

The night was alive with close encounters of the fishy kind. Visitors enjoyed a walk through a life-sized inflatable whale, live music and dancing with Billy Lee & the Swamp Critters, glow-in-the-dark sea animals, and games and treats. Special guest included Scripps Oceanography volunteers and representatives from San Diego Audubon Society, City of San Diego Water Conservation, Baskin Robbins, and Clif Bar.

Even the science was spooky! We welcomed guest scientists (and honorary pirates) from the Latz Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who brought bioluminescent dinoflagellates – the creepiest creeps of the deep from Scripps’ Marine Vertebrate Collections – as well as a real humbodlt squid and live hagfish!

Join us next year for more Halloween fun – it’s never too early to start thinking of your next ocean-inspired costume!
