Help Name Our Penguin

We need your help naming one of our Little Blue Penguins!

Birch Aquarium at Scripps is so excited for the opening of Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins July 12, 2022! Our Little Blue Penguins are the newest and cutest residents at the aquarium — but there’s one thing missing … a name! This is where YOU come in. We need your help naming one of our Little Blue Penguins!

This is the first time Birch Aquarium is naming any of its animals! We hope this naming opportunity instills a deeper connection with you to these charismatic creatures and inspires you to learn how to aid in conservation efforts to protect our ocean planet. Our newly-named penguin will be joining Magic, Nero, Persimmon, Reka, Cornelius, and Katie — who were all named through philanthropic gifts  — when they move into Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins this summer.

“Being able to introduce the community to Little Blue Penguins and foster a deeper connection and understanding of their environment, how important they are to our ecosystems and the survival challenges they face, is truly a milestone worth celebrating,” said Jenn Nero Moffatt, Senior Director of Animal Care, Science and Conservation.

What name will peng-win?

We are absolutely blown away by the almost 2000 name submissions for this Little Blue Penguin ... now we need your help making the final decision! Our staff has narrowed it down to these final 5 names:

Diego — for his new home in San Diego, the only place in Western US you can find Little Blue Penguins

Flip — a nod to penguin flippers and FLIP the FLoating Instrument Platform that was operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography for over 50 years

Triton — for this small but mighty (penguin) ruler of the sea that highlights our connection to the UC San Diego community

Azulito — just as the ocean is interconnected, Azulito means little blue in Spanish and highlights the unique interconnectedness of our binational region

Torrey — highlights the conservation of unique species, like the endangered Torrey Pines found only in San Diego and the Channel Islands
