In an effort to better serve the community and in partnership with many generous supporters, Birch Aquarium at Scripps offers financial aid to schools in need.

If you are a teacher or educator at a school in need and are interested in scheduling a program with us, we encourage you to apply for financial aid.  Financial assistance will help offset the costs for the following programs:

Price Philanthropies Ocean Science Education Fund 2019-20

Through the generosity of Price Philanthropies and other donors, the Price Philanthropies Ocean Science Education Fund was established to increase access to hands-on ocean science education by delivering our Aquarium Express Outreach programs directly to schools in need. In the 2019-20 school year, we are focusing our Price Philanthropies-funded Aquarium Express Outreach on City Heights elementary schools in the Hoover cluster, and can provide up to 130 free outreach programs to these schools. The following San Diego Unified School District elementary schools are eligible for fully funded outreaches through the Price Philanthropies Ocean Science Education Fund:

  • Central Elementary
  • Cherokee Point Elementary
  • Euclid Elementary
  • Edison Elementary
  • Franklin Elementary
  • Hamilton Elementary
  • Joyner Elementary
  • Normal Heights Elementary
  • Rosa Parks Elementary
  • Rowan Elementary

Aquarium Express Outreaches are classroom-based, 60-minute labs that come to your school. We allow a maximum of 25 students for Grades K-2 and 36 students for Grades 3 and 5 per lab and a minimum of 20 students. You must book a minimum of 2 labs per day to take advantage of these fully-funded programs. The following Aquarium Express Outreaches are available through the Price Philanthropies Ocean Science Education Fund:

  • Kindergarten: Tidepool Treasures
  • 1st Grade: Colossal Kelp*
  • 2nd Grade: Sandy Shores
  • 3rd Grade: Fish Diversity**
  • 5th Grade: Creatures of the Kelp*

*Sessions of Colossal Kelp and Creatures of the Kelp can be taught on the same day

**Sessions of Fish Diversity can be taught with any other program on the same day
