Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is diving deep into the cultural and conservation legacy of one of the most iconic ocean films of all time with JAWS@50: A Conversation with Wendy Benchley on Wednesday, November 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
This special evening celebrates the 50th anniversary of JAWS and features Wendy Benchley, ocean advocate and wife of the late JAWS author Peter Benchley. Guests will enjoy a lively reception with light refreshments, a sneak peek at the newly released JAWS@50 documentary — including never-before-seen footage — and a candid conversation about how the film helped shape public perception of sharks and catalyzed global marine conservation efforts.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to join Birch Aquarium in celebrating the 50th anniversary of JAWS — a film that sparked global fascination with sharks and jumpstarted shark research, which has transformed our understanding of the vital role sharks play in the health of our oceans,” said Wendy Benchley. “My late husband Peter always hoped his storytelling would inspire people to care more deeply about the ocean. Aquariums like Birch Aquarium play a vital role in turning that inspiration into action by advancing marine science and conservation. I can’t think of a better place to honor Peter’s legacy and explore how far we’ve come — and how far we still have to go.”
Following the talk, Benchley will be joined by renowned shark researchers Dovi Kacev and Brendan Talwar from Scripps Institution of Oceanography for a thought-provoking panel discussion about shark science, ocean storytelling and what lies ahead in the fight to protect these vital apex predators.
“This is an exciting opportunity to reflect on the cultural impact of JAWS while shining a light on advancements in shark science and conservation,” said Executive Director Harry Helling. “JAWS started an ironic representation of sharks in pop culture that continues to mature to this day, sparking curiosity, reaching new audiences and inspiring our next generation to care about the ocean.”
Kacev is a shark researcher and teaching professor whose research delves into the fascinating and mysterious world of sharks and rays, focusing on their habitats, behaviors and movement patterns. Driven by a lifelong passion, he is dedicated to uncovering the secrets of shark and ray ecology to deepen our understanding and support conservation and sustainability efforts.
Talwar is a postdoctoral scholar who combines marine ecology and fisheries science to advance sustainable fishing and protect threatened species. His research focuses on sustainable seafood and fishing practices, shark ecology as well as the conservation of threatened species. He was also recently featured on the Netflix show All the Sharks!
JAWS@50: A Conversation with Wendy Benchley is part of Birch Aquarium’s ongoing commitment to connecting the public with science, ocean conservation and the pressing issues facing our ocean planet.
