Why Scripps Matters

The ocean and humans are inextricably linked. We continually strive to illustrate this for our visitors, no matter where they live on the planet.

As the outreach center for world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, we have an even greater ability to draw those connections. Scripps scientists are at the forefront of discoveries about the planet, and their findings have a profound impact on our knowledge about and interaction with the ocean – here in San Diego and around the world.

This brief video is a great introduction to the importance of Scripps and helps illustrate why the staff and volunteers at Birch Aquarium at Scripps come to work every day.

Great video! Here in Santa Cruz we are priveledged to have the Long Marine Laboratory and the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center, as well as several other interactive and educational springboards to better understanding of our partner, the sea.

Very well dsone – I will pass this along to my other ocean loving friends!

Fantastic video. I surf and swim from the cove to shores all of the time and it hurts me to see any harm being done to our beaches. Scripps has some of the best researchers and I hope they can keep our oceans healthy.

I’m glad to see people care.
