Informal Educator Internship


If you are interested in a summer internship with Birch Aquarium at Scripps, please read all of the information below.

SLA Informal Educator Interns will:
  • Gain valuable experience with professionals in science education
  • Learn how to communicate science to the public
  • Work with campers, ages 4-15
  • Work as part of a team to create an exciting and fun summer experience
  • Spend the summer at Birch Aquarium and at local beaches
We are looking for someone who:
  • Is a student in high school or college *must be at least 16
  • Wants to work with campers in a fun learning environment
  • Has an interest in marine science and education
  • Has access to reliable transportation
  • Has experience (but not required) as a strong swimmer, snorkeler, surfer, and/or kayaker
Job Duties/Experiences include:
  • Demonstrating various science experiments and games, and interpreting hands-on live animal displays
  • Working indoors in a classroom and outdoors in the field
  • Preparing and cleaning up materials used for camp craft activities
  • Taking the lead on activities and crafts as needed
  • Walking long distances (1 mile or more) on field outings
  • Working with fellow interns and camp staff to create games and activities
  • Assisting campers during snorkel, surf, and other water experiences
  • Prepping supplies for camps
  • Getting wet and/or sandy
Required Orientation Dates: June 17 - 21, from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • Get to know your fellow interns and instructors
  • Take a trip to field camp locations for water-activity orientation
  • Learn all you need to know about the SLA program
  • Discover what your role will be

SLA Dates and Work Schedule
Interns are required to be available June 17 through August 23, 2013, a total of 10 weeks.  Schedules vary each week and will be pre-assigned.  You will be notified of your shifts 1 month in advance of the beginning of camp.

Applications Due: Friday, April 12, 2013. All volunteer and internship programs are unpaid.  Housing and transportation is not provided.
