Birch Aquarium hosts dynamic programs and special events throughout the year. From the Green Flash Concert Series for adults to Spring EGGstravaganza for families with young children, a variety of educational and entertaining events are sure to please ocean enthusiasts of all ages.


Springfest: IMMERSION

April 10, 6-8 p.m.
 
You've never seen or heard the aquarium quite like this! Birch Aquarium at Scripps teams up with UC San Diego's Department of Music to present this year's Springfest: IMMERSION, an evening of live music and experimental sounds spread throughout the aquarium. Join us for a unique offering of works conceived and performed by graduate students and inspired by the sea.

Performances will include: 

World premiere of San Diego composer Joe Garrison's new project The People Upstairs, featuring Global Music Award winning flutist Lori Bell, four solo wind instruments, and a jazz rhythm section

Giacinto Scelsi's haunting Khoom: 7 Episodes of an Unwritten Story of Love and Death in a Distant Land, showcases soprano, horn, string quartet, and percussion

Joe Cantrell creates a live soundtrack for the Hall of Fishes from altered vinyl records

New Sounds for the Sea: virtuosic contemporary solo and chamber music throughout the evening in front of the Kelp Forest

Piano and Bass duo Joshua Charney and Tommy Babbin use shark movements as inspiration for their free jazz improvisation at the ElasmoBeach exhibit

Singing for Their Supper: Chris Donahue uses live 3D video tracking of fish movements in the Hall of Fishes to generate electronic fish songs in real time

Celeste Oram and friends produce tiny events and surprise micro-performances throughout Birch Aquarium in Fish – Secret – Snag

Music graduate students facilitate an instrument-making table where children can create their own ocean-themed instruments to use in a pop-up sea sound orchestra performance at the end of the evening

Local writers offer intimate readings of their work throughout the aquarium's exhibits
