Birch Aquarium presents programs focused on the MLPA


Birch Aquarium at Scripps is offering presentations, outdoor excursions, and hands-on educational activities about the Marine Life Protection Act initiative. Learn about the importance of marine reserves while having fun with the entire family!

Kelp Forest Dive Shows

Be captivated as a diver submerges into the aquarium’s two-story, kelp forest tank to feed the animals and answer your questions about the underwater world. The 70,000-gallon tank represents local marine life within the 533-acre San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve. Inhabitants include three species of sharks, moray eels, barracuda, giant sea bass and other animals.

Tide-pool Excursions

Explore the beauty and mystery of life along the San Diego coast  – including the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve –during engaging tidepooling excursions with aquarium naturalists.

Whale-Watching Cruises
Daily tours: 9:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. or 1:30-5 p.m.

See the impact of marine protected areas aboard daily whale watching tours offered through the aquarium and San Diego Harbor Excursion. Experience the annual gray-whale migration when approximately 20,000 gray whales pass San Diego during their journey to and from Baja California. Naturalists share information about gray whales, the ecology and history of San Diego Bay, and Scripps Oceanography. Dolphins, sea lions, and marine birds typically make guest appearances.

Celebrate ocean conservation and learn more about Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Scripps Oceanography researchers and naturalists will help visitors of all ages learn about their role in protecting the ocean and how to get involved in the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative, now focused on creating a network of MPAs in Southern California. Meet local high school students who will share their MPA presentations with visitors. Make an ocean-inspired art project and take home conservation tips.
