Giant kelp has been harvested off the southern California coast for more than 90 years.

Ships with special underwater blades cut and gather kelp and take it to factories where it is chopped, cooked, and processed.

In the 1970's, yearly harvests of more than 170,000 tons supported a California kelp industry worth $40 million.

Harvesting kelp for commercial uses is a multimillion dollar business.
