HMS Challenger required extensive refitting to adapt her to her new role as scientific study platform. As a warship, Challenger had carried 17 cannons; 15 were removed. The interior of the ship was modified to include additional cabins for the scientific party and storage for their strange-seeming collection of equipment and supplies. And room had to be made for twelve and a half miles of the piano wire they used as dredging line, and 144 miles of hemp rope for sounding.


The Chemistry Laboratory


The scientists oversaw the construction and outfitting of their laboratories, one for chemistry and one for natural history and zoology.

Months before the expedition departed, naturalist Henry Nottidge Moseley began outfitting his zoological and natural history workroom. This laboratory is recreated at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, from accounts and drawings.
