What is the So-Cal Fly-off?

The So-Cal Fly off is an event designed to model the challenges of deep-sea exploration and the thrill of ocean discovery. High school and junior high school students from around southern California and Arizona test their design prowess by operating their miniature robot submarines called ROVs (for Remotely Operated Vehicles) to complete some challenging tasks.

Want to get your high school students excited about literature, history, math, science and engineering? Take part in the 7th annual So-Cal ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Flyoff. The Southern California regional competition will be hosted by Birch Aquarium at Scripps in April 2008. Top teams will advance to the national competition hosted by Marine Advance Technology Education and Scripps Institution of Oceanography in June 2008. Competitors will learn to use simple, common materials to design and build a ROV. They will then use these ROVs in real world applications of exploration and utility during the competition. For more information on the competition or advice on how to put a team together, please call the ROV Coordinator at 858-822-5331.
