TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTHABITAT WORKSHOPS 2009-2010Designed for K-8 teachers, science specialists, and informal educators, each MARE-based workshop provides training in standards-rich, inquiry-based science strategies for addressing the needs of English-language learners, and ideas for incorporating literacy into any science program. Workshops include an age-appropriate field trip that you can use with your students, guest lectures by Scripps Oceanography researchers, and access to aquarium resources.

This exciting workshop will explore ocean science content centered on coral reefs and examine how climate change is affecting these delicate ecosystems. Includes inquiry-based teaching strategies for grades 4-8 that are easily transportable for classroom use. RSVP: 858-534-7336 NATIONAL OCEAN SCIENCES BOWL (NOSB)High school teachers—gather your most interested science students and join Birch Aquarium at Scripps for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl competition. Birch Aquarium and Scripps Institution of Oceanography will host the 13th annual La Jolla Surf Bowl on March 6, 2010. The first place team from our Southern California regional competition will advance to the national competition in St. Petersburg, Florida, on April 23-25, 2010. The theme for 2010 is Technology. Come to our open house on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, from 4-7 p.m. We’ll take a walk along the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier, take part in a squid dissection, observe and sort local plankton, and meet other students interested in the ocean sciences.
