Students participate in one of Birch Aquarium's school programs
Grades 2 to 3
Fish Diversity Forked tails, rounded tails, pointed tails and more! Through hands-on investigations, students will learn about the diversity of fish teeth, fins and coloration and how their different adaptations help them survive in the sea.
Sandy Shores Ever wonder why sand is pink, black or even green? Learn about where sand comes from, what happens to it once it gets to the beach and which animals make the sand their home. Students will examine sand samples from all over the world, observe animals that live in sandy habitats and investigate how they use their environment to find food and shelter.
Creatures Of The Kelp Want to trade your peanut butter sandwich for a hearty helping of kelp? Students will explore the wonders of the kelp forest, discover how animals there have adapted ways of finding food and even how humans use kelp in everyday food items through hands-on experiments and interactions with live animals.
Can You Dig It?Make no bones about it! Students become marine paleontologists as they discover how different types of fossils are created and what they teach scientists about the past. Students will unearth the mysteries of ocean fossils by performing their own mini-excavation, matching fossils to present-day relatives and creating their own take-home fossil.
Fish PrintingDiscover the wonders of science through art investigation. Students will create colorful fish prints using real and rubber fish, while learning about the basic body parts and features of fish. All materials will be supplied.
Water Works Are you ready to get wet and wild? Through hands-on investigation and interactions at our water tables, students will explore water s unique properties, discover the power of water in motion and learn what it means to conserve this precious resource.
Shark SurvivorHow do sharks survive challenges of nature and those presented by humans? Our live shark displays provide an ideal living classroom for your students to explore the challenges sharks face and how they have adapted to survive for over 400 million years. Students will tour shark exhibits to observe live shark behavior and adaptations and use hands-on models to discover sharks unique design.
Self-Guided VisitDiscover an ocean full of adventure at Birch Aquarium. Lead your classes along the Pacific coast as they explore the exhibits of cool northern waters all the way down to tropical coral reefs in Baja, Mexico. Make sure to stop by our tide-pool plaza, the outdoor shark display and our Wonders of Water and Feeling the Heat: The Climate Challenge exhibits.
Beach TeachExplore the Ecological Preserve of La Jolla Shores beach in this fun, hands-on field science program. Each program is customized based on tide and weather conditions and student grade level.

BEACH INVESTIGATIONUsing clues found right under their toes, students will learn about the life surrounding the sandy beach. Participants will dig in the sand to understand how animals use their adaptations to survive this changing environment. They will also learn about the local kelp forests and its residents and explore how sand is made, what it is made of and how it gets to our beaches.
ZONATION STATION (subject to tides)Animals will create homes on any surface that is available. Students will visit Scripps pier pilings to learn how zonation on a pier piling is similar to tide pools. Meet mussels, anemones, snails and crabs and discover how they have made a home together.
TIDEPOOLING (subject to tides)Life in the tide pools is no day at the beach! Students will learn about life on the rocky shore and the special adaptations needed to survive in this harsh environment. They ll also take a sneak peak at how animals move, camouflage, find food and hold on in the tide pools.
